Yume from Grimgar of Fantasy & Ash

anime 3dprinting airbrushing painting

Here's a 3D print and paint of Yume from the anime Grimgar of Fantasy & Ash. It's based on the fantastic Sketchfab model by a user called 'SWJames' over on Sketchfab. I recreated it with a higher poly-count and added details here and there, then printed and painted it. It's mostly airbrushed to give a smoother finish and better transition between the colours.

This is the biggest figure I've printed so far, which made airbrush painting the small details a little easier - usually I'm working with small 5-10cm tall things, but this is a good 18cm or so. I'm pretty happy with how the paint finish came out, but there are still lots of imperfections I'd love to fix for the next model - I just ran out of time with this one.

As usual, I learnt a lot of new techniques. I experimented with masking to see if there were any better ways. This time I tried Parafilm, silly putty and masking liquid, but none really worked perfectly - the best technique was still just cutting bits of card and holding against areas I didn't want to get paint on while spraying. I also still need to find a better way to paint skin with the airbrush. This took forever and ever, and I ended up having to brush on extra layers to get the colour to show - maybe I just need more patience and more layers built up with the airbrush. I also managed to snap off a leg while painting, so that needed a bit of repair work and repainting.

Here's some work-in-progress pictures so far:

Who I am

I'm Blake and I like to tinker with things and make stuff. When I'm not programming or developing random systems, I'm playing with electronics, doodling bits of art, 3D modelling or sculpting and painting things or nerding out watching sci-fi or horror TV.

From 2001 I worked in the games industry, eventually specialising in tools to aid in the development of video games and their engines. In 2011 I left the industry and teamed up with a few other talented composers to utilise my knowledge to help build the company 'Spitfire Audio'.

I also periodically compose soundtracks for video-games and have worked on titles such as The Stanley Parable and Portal Knights. You've probably also heard my music in random TV commercials at some point.
