Bestiarum's "The Restless" bust

3dprinting painting

Here's another painted Bestiarum miniature, this time a zombie with some exposed ribs, scraps of clothing and a fairly unpleasant expression. I first printed him back in 2023 and have only just got around to painting him. He's been waiting a while, but at least being dead means he wasn't in much of a hurry.

The painting was similar to my other Bestiarum pieces, building up the base colours and shading before going over the details with my usual drybrushing. There's plenty of texture on this one for that to pick out, particularly around the ribs and ragged bits of cloth.

Getting the skin colour right was the difficult part. Zombie skin is a strange thing to try and settle on, and I think I ended up going a little too green. I was aiming for something dead and unhealthy looking, but there's probably room to pull it back a bit next time.

You can see from this render of Bestiarum's how it probably should have looked! More pales, purples and blues - more zombie and less goblin. Something for me to keep in mind painting future undead.

One fun bit was adding the blood. I used a red wash and thickened it up a bit with paint medium, and let it drip down from his mouth so it looked like he was drooling it. A suitably horrible finishing touch, or too much? Who can say?

I'd tone back the green skin colour if I painted him again, but it feels good to finally get some paint on something that's been sitting around since 2023.

Who I am

I'm Blake and I like to tinker with things and make stuff. When I'm not programming or developing random systems, I'm playing with electronics, doodling bits of art, 3D modelling or sculpting and painting things or nerding out watching sci-fi or horror TV.

From 2001 I worked in the games industry, eventually specialising in tools to aid in the development of video games and their engines. In 2011 I left the industry and teamed up with a few other talented composers to utilise my knowledge to help build the company 'Spitfire Audio'.

I also periodically compose soundtracks for video-games and have worked on titles such as The Stanley Parable, Portal Knights, Lost in Random as well as a few random projects such as trailer for Terraria and Minecraft and the like. You've probably also heard my music in random TV commercials at some point.
